Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast, often a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is sold commercially as a food product.
Nutritional yeast has a strong flavor that is described as nutty, cheesy, or creamy, which makes it popular as an ingredient in cheese substitutes. Especially good on popcorn!
Unlike regular yeast, Nutritional Yeast won’t bubble or grow or help leaven breads. It's different to brewer’s yeast and won't feed the growth of Candida in the gut.
Nutritional Yeast is:
- An excellent source of B vitamins
- Gluten free
- Sugar free
